Frequently Asked Questions

+ Requirements

  • Excellent rapport & attitude
  • Professionalism (punctuality and presentability)
  • Teaching qualification (TEFL, CELTA, TESOl etc.)

+ Is EU a language centre?

  • English United is a home tutoring provider.
  • We have an administrative office, but tutors travel to student’s homes for private tutoring sessions.
  • Students don’t travel to a traditional language centre.

+ EU Compared to Private Tutoring

  • Private tutors have to find their own classes, which can be difficult if your students are Vietnamese speakers. We find classes for you.
  • Private tutors struggle to communicate and negotiate with Vietnamese speakers. We handle communications, logistics and timetables so there are no misunderstandings or stressful situations.
  • Private tutors can have a hard time getting paid, especially if students decide to cancel classes last minute. We guarantee your pay for every lesson. If students cancel, there is no disagreement or confusion - you get paid.
  • Private tutors may struggle to form classes of the right level and to provide suitable materials. We provide the educational management, so your students are the right level to work together, and materials and lessons plans are provided.

+ EU Compared to Public School

  • Our classes have on average ten times fewer students, which makes for a more friendly and less intense teaching environment.
  • Instead of a sea of vaguely familiar faces, smaller private classes give you a chance to get to know your students, which many teachers find rewarding.
  • Our high ratio of administrative staff to teachers guarantees you a smooth experience working with us. You’re always supported in every way to provide the classes and are not tasked with academically impossible goals or met with confusing bureaucracy.

+ EU Compared to language centre

  • The classes are much smaller than at a language centre, which is both less stressful and more personal.
  • Unlike a language centre, you can pick and choose the classes you accept with no pressure. Many language centres will require you to take on an increasing workload over time. While we will offer you more classes, you’re welcome to accept as few or as many classes as you like.
  • Classes are held at students' homes.

+ Can I teach with other schools?

  • Almost all of our teachers teach with us alongside another teaching job.
  • Our flexible system of offering you classes mean you can build a tutoring schedule around your school work or other activities.

+ Student age range?

  • Our typical students are children from 6 - 13, but we offer classes of all ages and you are free to turn down any classes that don’t suit your preferences. There is no pressure to take any classes that don’t suit you.

+ Can I choose my students?

  • Yes.
  • We send you the deatils of every class you are offered in advance.
  • You can select only the class types you’re interested in (children, teens, IELTS etc.).

+ What curriculum does EU use?

  • This varies depending on the age and goals of the student(s), but our most common offering is the Cambridge curriculum.

+ Where are the classes located?

  • Classes are all around HCMC, centring on D2 and Bình Thạnh. You can select classes that are at locations convenient for you.

+ Does EU offer online classes?

  • Yes; this is less frequent than in-person classes.

+ How consistent are the classes?

  • Once you’re onboarded you can accept any class that we offer you.
  • Once accepted the classes are extremely regular, as the schedule is fixed in advance.
  • Students typically complete multiple courses with us and if you are willing, you will remain as their teacher. For this reason, classes are very consistent and reliable.

+ Expected working hours?

  • You may accept as many or as few classes as you wish.
  • There is no standard expectation as every teacher has their own preferences.

+ Most desirable characteristics?

  • Provide a professional service (punctuality, attire, politeness).
  • Provide a positive, cheerful and friendly learning environment.
  • Motivate students to move forward in the long and often difficult journey of learning English.

+ What is the onboarding process?

  1. Send in your CV and documentation
  2. Pass an interview
  3. Sign a zero-hours contract (this does not commit you to any hours, it just confirms how we work, such as dress code, punctuality etc.)
  4. Receive a Proposal to Teach. This is an offer to take a specific class, at a certain time. All the class details (such as schedule, lesson type etc.) are included for you to review. You may then decide if the class suits your requirements.
  5. Accept the Proposal to Teach if this time and class suits you.
  6. Teach the class according to the proposal and receive pay monthly.

+ Any reason I shouldn't apply?!

  • No! Signing a contract with us does not oblige you to any work, it just means that we will send you tutoring opportunities, which you may accept or reject at your convenience. Apply in 2 minutes here.
